These unique one off design blankets are made from sarees and upcycled into beautifully made blankets, which can be used as picnic blankets, throws or a double sized blanket for bedding.  These blankets have been made by Fair Trade artisans in Bangladesh with kantha stitching.

Kantha stitching is a traditional Bengali craft passed from one generation to the next. It involves stitching or embroidering patterns onto fabric, to create a design - sometimes it is a repetitive design as in our Kantha Saree Covers.

Rows of stitches is the kantha technique, straight lines or curves create the embroidery on clothing, sarees or throws.  Our saree covers use straight rows of stitches, using contrasting colour threads.

The patterns of our covers are varied, as the fabric is upcycled and repurposed from the fabric industry in Bangladesh. Made of cotton, the covers are "back or front", with different colourways on each side. Patches are used to join pieces of fabrics so you will find small and larger patches combined to make up the cover.

Please note: These are indicative pictures and the colourway pictured probably will not be available. They are ever changing as we sell, so please let us know in the "order comments" section of checkout if you have a preference for colours / colourways.

We will choose a colour as close to the colourway you've selected and your colour choice availability is not guarenteed. Exchanges cannot be made due to your choice of colour not being availalbe, due to the nature of this upcycled product. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Your blanket has been made by Fair Trade artisans in Bangladesh with kantha stitching. You can generally wash it in a washing machine, but there are some precautions you should take to ensure the blanket’s longevity and maintain its quality.

Kantha blankets, also known as kantha quilts, are typically made from layers of recycled cotton saris stitched together with a distinctive running stitch. These blankets are generally quite durable and can with stand machine washing. However, to best care for your kantha blanket, follow these guidelines:

1.Use a gentle cycle: Always wash your kantha blanket on a gentle or delicate cycle to minimize agitation and protect the stitching.

2.Cold water: Use cold water for washing, as it helps preserve the colours and prevents shrinkage.

3.Mild detergent: Choose a mild, liquid detergent that’s suitable for delicate fabrics.

4.Wash separately: To prevent colour bleeding, wash your kantha blanket separately from other items.

5.Skip the fabrics oftener: Avoid using fabric softeners, as they can coat the fibres and affect the blanket’s texture.

6.Drying: While machine drying on low heat is possible, air-drying is gentler on the fabric and stitching. If you choose to machine dry, use a low heat setting.

7.Ironing: It’s generally best to avoid ironing kantha blankets, as the heat can damage the delicate stitching and fabric.

Remember that while machine washing is generally safe for kantha blankets, frequent washing may cause some fading over time. If you’re concerned about preserving the blanket’s appearance, you might consider hand washing or spot cleaning for minor stains.

By following these care instructions, you can keep your kantha blanket from Bangladesh cleanand beautiful for years to come
